Columbus Audubon

Columbus Audubon was founded in 1913 and, with nearly three thousand members, is one of the largest chapters of the National Audubon Society. Our mission remains true to our original purpose while we address today’s challenges in a bipartisan way:

To promote the appreciation, understanding and conservation of birds, other wildlife and their habitats, for present and future generations.

We also enjoy a unique partnership with the Grange Insurance Audubon Center, which is located at the edge of downtown Columbus in the Brewery District, German Village, Franklinton and near South side neighborhoods in Scioto Audubon Metro Park. The Center’s location has been well-known to birders for decades and has long been included in the Christmas Bird Count, an annual census of the area bird population that provides vital data about bird populations for scientific purposes.

Columbus Audubon offers a variety of ways for members and other nature enthusiasts and advocates to learn about and enjoy wildlife and to work to protect habitat. We organize field trips throughout the year, conduct monthly meetings with programs on a variety of bird conservation issues, hold Beginner Bird walks at the Grange Audubon Center every Saturday morning and participate in a multitude of community outreach programs. We celebrate each Spring at the opening of the bird migration season with EcoWeekend, a fun, educational weekend-long program for adults and families held in the beautiful rolling hills of Southern Ohio. We also manage a rare wetland, Calamus Swamp, near Circleville, Ohio, as a Columbus Audubon nature preserve. For those who wish to give back to nature through volunteering their time, we offer opportunities such as the Service in the Preserves program, a hands-on series of workdays in the field with opportunities to help restore and maintain habitat in Ohio.
