What We Do

The Athens Conservancy is a nonprofit organization of a type known as a land trust. Our mission is to protect natural areas in Athens County, Ohio, and neighboring counties.  We own and manage nature preserves, acquired with the aid of grants and donations, and we work with landowners to create conservation easements.  The lands featured on the Preserves page are open to the public.  If you are interested in visiting an Athens Conservancy property that is not on that page, please contact us for permission.

Other activities include controlling non-native invasive plants, supporting outdoor recreation, public-service mapping, planning for land management on both private and public levels, and public education.

We are an all-volunteer organization with the exception of occasional paid seasonal interns. This means that almost all our income goes towards fulfilling our mission, and very little goes towards administrative expenses. We are governed by a board of directors that may include up to fifteen people. The board meets monthly.
