What We Do

Black Swamp Conservancy is a land trust dedicated to protecting agricultural and natural areas. In doing this, we preserve the rural heritage of family farms, unique natural habitats, and lakes and streams of northwest Ohio. Since our founding in 1993, we have grown to protect more than 140 properties covering over 19,000 acres. Beyond conservation agreements, Black Swamp Conservancy works with state and local organizations to restore black swamp prairie, wetlands, and woods in an effort, among other things, to reduce nutrients and sediments entering the Lake Erie watershed. The Conservancy also features a Food and Farm Initiative which aims to preserve family farmland, while helping new farmers learn the trade and build their own enterprises in ways that protect our ecosystems and keep the fruits of their labors within our local economy.
